Specchio infranto di Mercè Rodoreda: un capitolo del tardo Modernismo europeo

The historical-critical category of Modernism, born in the Anglo-Saxon area since the 1920s, has now spread to other European literature, with common characteristics: the renewed treatment of psychic life, the multiplication of narrative points of view, the transformation of the spatio-temporal intersection and the related disintegration of the plot, the spread of juxtapositional and non- hierarchical syntactic structures and the pervasive use of free indirect discourse and sometimes interior monologue. More recently, a stream of Late Modernism, which relaunched in the 1950s the modernist styles, has been valued. This contribution proposes to read within this category the work of the Catalan writer Mercè Rodoreda (1908-1983) and in particular verifies this proposal in the novel Mirall trencat [A broken mirror] (1974), of which the narrative structure and techniques are investigated.
