This paper presents a recent educational project on vocational language learning and teaching among mobility workers, developed by the training department of Costa Crociere in collaboration with the Università per Stranieri di Siena (DITALS Centre). A fleet of 14 cruise ships, each with 400-1000 crew members and 1000-4000 passengers is a unique plurilingual context. Most of the crew members come from Indonesia, India, China and the Philippines, most passengers are Italian or European. The author reports the results of a survey implemented among around 100 members of the international crew of 11 Costa cruise ships and their language teachers, in order to investigate both learner profiles and language needs. Consequently, innovative learning materials and methods for Italian as a second language have been implemented to improve quality of service and safety onboard. The project has been awarded with the European Language Label 2013 for innovative projects in language teaching and learning.
