This paper illustrates how Italian nonverbal communication (in particular Italian gestures) have developed in the Nineties of the 20th century into a semiotic codified language, understood and used by contemporary Italians independently from their regional origin, with variations due to space, time, society, context and media, according to the same social variation observed and described regarding the Italian language. In order to define a framework of reference for further investigation, the Author has considered only those gestures strictly related to verbal language, indicated by Ekman and Friesen (1969, 1981) as “emblems”. Out of these, only “arbitrary emblems” have been included into a list of one hundred gestures, organized according to their communicative function and presented at the end of the chapter. Such list contains all gestures that the Author has found in a corpus of films, newspapers, narrative texts and advertisements, dating back to the years 1989-1990. These 100 gestures represent the core of contemporary pan-Italian nonverbal communication, which has marginalized other gestures typical of local regional cultures, and which tends to include new gestures coming from foreign cultures, due to new language and cultural contacts.
Il saggio illustra come la comunicazione nonverbale italiana (in particolare i gesti italiani) si sia sviluppata negli anni Novanta del 20esimo secolo in un linguaggio semiotico codificato, compreso e usato dagli italiani contemporanei indipendentemente dalla loro origine regionale, con variazioni dovute allo spazio, al tempo, alla società, al contesto e ai media, secondo la stessa variazione sociale osservata e descritta in riferimento alla lingua italiana. Per elaborare un quadro di riferimento per ulteriori ricerche, l’Autrice ha considerato solo quei gesti strettamente riferiti al linguaggio verbale, che Ekman e Friesen (1969, 1981) hanno definito “emblemi”. Fra questi, solo gli “emblemi arbitrari” sono stati inclusi in una lista di 100 gesti, organizzata in base alla loro funzione comunicativa e presentata alla fine del capitolo. Tale lista contiene tutti i gesti che l’Autrice ha individuato in un corpus di film, giornali, testi narrativi e pubblicità risalenti agli anni 1989-1990. Questi 100 gesti rappresentano il nucleo della comunicazione nonverbale pan-italiana contemporanea, che ha marginalizzato altri gesti tipici delle culture regionali locali e che tende a inglobare nuovi gesti provenienti da culture straniere, a causa di nuovi contatti linguistici e culturali.
