This article focuses on constructions in Ancient Greek formed by two verbs, namely the verb εἶναι ‘to be’ and the participle present participle of another verb. These phrases are generally analysed as verbal periphrases with a progressive value, in the same way as English be going to, French être en train de, etc. From this morpho-syntactic point of view, the two elements are reduced to a single verbal unit. In this study, on the other hand, we consider them to be as markers of certain types of syntactic constructions, namely thetic or cleft constructions. The analysis is based on the corpus made up of all the occurrences of these constructions in the New Testament.
