This study investigates some of the changes affecting the aorist voice system in Post Classical Greek, particularly focusing on the distribution of the aorists marked by middle inflection compared to the so-called “passive” aorists, where active endings are associated to the -η-/- ϑη- affixes. The data, spanning from iii BCE to i-ii CE, are taken from a corpus of texts at the edges of the traditional canon: on the one hand, the Septuagint and the New Testament, where the contact with Semitic languages is crucial, and, on the other hand, the Greek papyri private letters from Egypt, which provide an unique insight on everyday language. The analysis, which combines qualitative and quantitative methods, confirms the wellknown spread of the “passive” aorists at the expense of middle inflection, showing a wide alignment among the texts under examination

Abstract
The analysis, which combines qualitative and quantitative methods, confirms the wellknown spread of the “passive” aorists at the expense of middle inflection, showing a wide alignment among the texts under examinationFile | Dimensione | Formato | |
