Purpose of this essay is to analyze the occurrences of ‘paura’ in Giovanni Boccaccio’s ‘Decameron’ to show how the author contextualizes this sentiment in his novel and in medieval society. Boccaccio’s ‘fear’ has a polysemic meaning: it is an emotion that embraces every area of human life, in fact it often conveys the action and the inaction of the characters. This research highlights the interesting role assumed by ‘fear’ differently in men and women; and the various types of fear represented by Boccaccio’s tales, in which the dread of plague plays just a secondary role.

Abstract
Purpose of this essay is to analyze the occurrences of ‘paura’ in Giovanni Boccaccio’s ‘Decameron’ to show how the author contextualizes this sentiment in his novel and in medieval society. Boccaccio’s ‘fear’ has a polysemic meaning: it is an emotion that embraces every area of human life, in fact it often conveys the action and the inaction of the characters. This research highlights the interesting role assumed by ‘fear’ differently in men and women; and the various types of fear represented by Boccaccio’s tales, in which the dread of plague plays just a secondary role.File in questo prodotto:
