From De Mauro's very first works, the idea of a linguistics committed to the study of the development of linguistic and, more generally, semiotic abilities of individuals emerges. This particular attention of De Mauro's is not, however, only the consequence of a peculiar scientific interest but, as we will try to show in this paper, it has to do with something deeper: it is the logical outcome of a theoretical architecture of a philosophical-semiotic nature that De Mauro erected starting from Introduzione alla Semanntica(1965). This theoretical framework constructed the conditions of possibility for the development of an educational linguistics and, at the same time, opened up a potential field of investigation for semiotics as well: the semiotic analysis of the processes involved in the development of the general symbolic faculties of individuals in learning contexts. A theoretical space that the discipline of semiotics, however, has never developed and that could be of great interest and utility today.
