This article, the third in a series of four, examines some of the problems related to the teaching of geography in nineteenth-century Italy. The analysis will start from the status of geography as a scientific and academic discipline in the nineteenth century, and from the debate that occurred in 1892 during the first Italian geographical congress regarding the teaching of geography. The subject of discussion were the shortcomings of the school manual as a tool of national education. Some of these textbooks will then be considered in order to better understand what educational and cultural dynamics and problems these kind of books was simultaneously reflecting and causing.
Il presente articolo, il terzo di un serie di quattro, prende in esame alcuni problemi relativi all’insegnamento della geografia nell’Italia del XIX scolo. L’analisi prenderà le mosse dallo statuto della geografia come disciplina scientifica e accademica nell’Ottocento, e dal dibattito occorso nel 1892 durante il primo congresso geografico italiano in merito alla didattica della geografia. Oggetto di discussione erano i difetti del manuale scolastico come strumento di educazione nazionale. Si considereranno quindi alcuni di questi manuali per comprendere meglio di quali dinamiche e problemi educativi e culturali questo genere di libri fosse contemporaneamente il riflesso e la causa.
