In November 2022, the official announcement by the Italian Ministry of Culture of the discoveries of numerous bronze Etruscan and Roman statues from the ongoing excavation at the Bagno Grande of San Casciano dei Bagni, in the province of Siena, at the border between Tuscany, Umbria and Latium , brought a small archaeological site of the southernmost part of the province of Siena under international spotlight This paper aims to present the scientific ‘behind-the-scenes’, i.e. an overview of the multidisciplinary research in place, with the purpose of situating this excavation within the framework of current studies on thermal and healing sites as well as of overcoming rhetoric and political use associated to the discovery.
