The paper discusses some aspects of the Italian and English subtitles of two films in Mandarin, one from Taiwan (filmed in 1994) and one from mainland China (2017), that belong to the genre of ‘family ethics’. Expressing the nuances of family language, the films are rich in pragmatic and culture-specific items that require particular skills and strategies in order to render in translation the complexity of the relationships between the characters and the intensity of the emotions they express, maintaining the semiotic cohesion of filmic text.
