The word scommessa ‘bet’ becomes common in texts starting in the late 15th century and throughout the 16th century, against the background of a widespread habit of gambling. As a past participle, its immediate affiliation is with the verb scommettere ‘bet’, but ancient attestations suggest that the verb (which is attested later) might instead have arisen from the noun. As for the value of scommessa, the relationship between the values ‘challenge’ and ‘pledge’ may be traced back on a long path to the polisemy of Lat. committere.

Abstract

The word scommessa ‘bet’ becomes common in texts starting in the late 15th century and throughout the 16th century, against the background of a widespread habit of gambling. As a past participle, its immediate affiliation is with the verb scommettere ‘bet’, but ancient attestations suggest that the verb (which is attested later) might instead have arisen from the noun. As for the value of scommessa, the relationship between the values ‘challenge’ and ‘pledge’ may be traced back on a long path to the polisemy of Lat. committere.
