To the well-known differences of pronunciation between the Italian performed in Florence and that spoken in Rome there can be added now the enunciation of the diphthong ie in the stressed syllable, which in Rome tends to be performed with a closed sound, as has been documented in the results of a survey and in the accounts collected on the web. The closed sound of the vowel in this diphthong – of which there is no reporting in the 20th century – seems to be more frequent among the Romans born right after the Second World War, while in the younger generations this tendency seems to be in decline. The appearance of this phenomenon may have been influenced by structural settlements of the system and in particular by the large migrating wave in the last century, given the fact that immigrants have always been bearers of the diphthong with a closed sound.

Abstract
To the well-known differences of pronunciation between the Italian performed in Florence and that spoken in Rome there can be added now the enunciation of the diphthong ie in the stressed syllable, which in Rome tends to be performed with a closed sound, as has been documented in the results of a survey and in the accounts collected on the web. The closed sound of the vowel in this diphthong – of which there is no reporting in the 20th century – seems to be more frequent among the Romans born right after the Second World War, while in the younger generations this tendency seems to be in decline. The appearance of this phenomenon may have been influenced by structural settlements of the system and in particular by the large migrating wave in the last century, given the fact that immigrants have always been bearers of the diphthong with a closed sound.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
