Lo pseudo-indefinito in Dante

The pseudo-indefinite in Dante · Michele Barbi was the first to point out a particular lin- guistic and textual strategy in the Divine Comedy: the use of undefined adjectives and pronouns with determined referents. The interpretation of the passages in question can reveal certain surprises, since it is linked to the principle of the elasticity of the cooperative effort, whereby the reader is called upon to grasp the allusion contained in the text. Therefore, it is possible to distinguish some sure cases and others that are doubtful, either because of the uncertainty of the commentators in understanding the referent, or because of the possibility that it is not a true and proper indefinite.
