This paper deals with the origin of the metalinguistic labels for diathesis / voice in Western terminology. It aims at reconstructing some facets of the complex dynamics relating the modern terms to the Classical ones, with particular reference to the rise of the dichotomy between the two sets, going back to Greek διάθεσις and to Latin vox respectively. The hypothesis is suggested that the process leading Latin vox to refer to grammatical voice arose within the opposition between vox and significatio 'form' / 'meaning', presumably under the influence of the Greek pair φωνή / σημαινόμενον.
