This article explores the potential of parallel corpora for the lexicographic description of art- historical terminology. Drawing on the Italian-German parallel corpus of Giorgio Vasari’s Vite (1568), it examines the translation equivalents of the Italian lexemes tavola and pittura in the German translation by Kupper (2008). The analysis shows that neither term is rendered through a single fixed equivalent. Instead, translation choices reflect semantic, functional, stylistic and contextual factors. The study also compares corpus findings with the information provided by major online bilingual dictionaries and highlights several gaps, particularly regarding usage contexts and functional differentiation among translation equivalents. The results suggest that parallel corpora can complement traditional lexicographic resources by providing empirically grounded information on translation patterns and lexical variation. They therefore represent a valuable resource for both translation practice and the lexicographic description of specialised terminology in the field of art history.
