In the treatises of the school of Alberic of Montecassino, the participle is dealt with as an instrument for the practice of commutatio. This is a practice that transforms two coordinated finite propositions into a compact complex one (ego ambulo et clamo: ego ambulans clamo). The correlations suggested in these school treatises give insightful hints into the syntax and diathesis of the participle itself. This paper draws on them and discusses their descriptive implications.

Abstract

In the treatises of the school of Alberic of Montecassino, the participle is dealt with as an instrument for the practice of commutatio. This is a practice that transforms two coordinated finite propositions into a compact complex one (ego ambulo et clamo: ego ambulans clamo). The correlations suggested in these school treatises give insightful hints into the syntax and diathesis of the participle itself. This paper draws on them and discusses their descriptive implications.
