The essay explores the influence of Futurist graphic design in the emergence of the so-called ‘New Typography’ (neue Typographie), analysing in particular the expressive importance of blank spaces in avant-garde typography. An outline of Marinetti’s proposal concerning Futurist typography introduces the study starting with his embryonic experiments dated 1891 focused on the space of the page on which he was writing. El Lissitzky’s theories about the visual effect of the words are then examined compared with László Moholy-Nagy's contemporary research on the physicality of writing. The essay concludes with the technical studies of Jan Tschichold, who traced the historic role of blank and unprinted spaces in the birth of modern typography, thus acknowledging the typographic meaning of the container of writing.
