This article, the last in a series of four, considers the vicissitudes of the geography textbook during the 20th century. Against the backdrop, we can thus observe the role of geography in Italian schools in a period characterised by great upheavals and profound transformations. If at the dawn of the 20th century the Kingdom of Italy was still facing the problem of widespread illiteracy, the already inherent germs of nationalism and colonialism found a tragic culmination in the dramas of fascism and the world wars. These events profoundly influenced the geography taught in schools. In Republican Italy, the discipline of geography was then gradually restructured until the contemporary era, during which this subject underwent a process of deconstruction and a reduction in the timetable.

Il presente articolo, l’ultimo di un serie di quattro, prende in considerazione le vicende del libro di testo di geografia nel corso del XX secolo. In controluce possiamo osservare il ruolo della geografia nelle scuole italiane in un periodo caratterizzato da grandi sconvolgimenti e profonde trasformazioni. Se all'alba del Novecento il Regno d'Italia doveva ancora affrontare il problema di un'analfabetizzazione diffusa, i germi già insiti del nazionalismo e del colonialismo andarono incontro a un tragico successo nei drammi del fascismo e delle guerre mondiali. In età repubblicana la geografia venne poi gradualmente ristrutturata fino all'età contemporanea, durante la quale la materia va incontro a un processo di destrutturazione e riduzione di orario.
