The Algebra (I ed. 1572) of the Bolognese Rafael Bombelli is a treatise of recognized importance in history of mathematics and also presents reasons of linguistic interest, given that the author, referring to himself as a explicitly to a Greek source unknown before the Renaissance age (Diophanto of Alexandria), introduces and inaugurates an early attempt at symbolic representation of unknowns, powers and roots. In some metalinguistic notes can be glimpsed in Bombelli a certain sensibility for the correct expression of the mathematical concepts, as well as the tendency to overcome the Arab tradition through classicistic recovery; the revaluation of the Greek contribution and the downsizing of the Arab mediation, starting from instances of humanistic, has had a long course in historical reconnaissance to determine for at least three centuries the oblivion of Fibonacci's masterpiece. In the article we also dwell on the word thing (the technicality that denotes the unknown in the texts of abacus from the Three to the sixteenth century, cast translation from Arabic, passed into Italian for the through RES del Liber Abaci): this is a particular case of Italianism in mathematics, documented in some treaties in French, German and English. The terminology of Bombelli's text, reissued in 1966 on the basis of the princeps, is also analyzed through some comparison with a previous draft manuscript, as evidenced by two codices preserved at the Archiginnasio and the University Library of Bologna

Abstract
The terminology of Bombelli's text, reissued in 1966 on the basis of the princeps, is also analyzed through some comparison with a previous draft manuscript, as evidenced by two codices preserved at the Archiginnasio and the University Library of BolognaFile | Dimensione | Formato | |
