The essay analyzes some textbooks and grammar books for African natives which were used in the former Italian colonies of Libya and Horn of Africa and focuses on the debate about educational politics that took place in the colonial age (1882-1943). It’s clear that these texts lack the ability to adjust to the local public and environment, mostly when trying to teach the Italian language to foreign learners; moreover the propaganda has a great role and it faces topics such as racial differences between the colonizers and the natives or the advantages the “subjects” could benefit thanks to Italy.

Abstract

The essay analyzes some textbooks and grammar books for African natives which were used in the former Italian colonies of Libya and Horn of Africa and focuses on the debate about educational politics that took place in the colonial age (1882-1943). It’s clear that these texts lack the ability to adjust to the local public and environment, mostly when trying to teach the Italian language to foreign learners; moreover the propaganda has a great role and it faces topics such as racial differences between the colonizers and the natives or the advantages the “subjects” could benefit thanks to Italy.
