The aim of the chapter is to show how in Italy – where the weakness and/or poor application of language policies is having fairly serious effects in various social contexts – the emphasis is on the Italian language alone, as a result of an exclusively monolingual attitude and teaching. To understand the reasons for this policy, in which linguistic and cultural diversity is notrecognized, let alone valued, treated in a wholly instrumental way and therefore totally denied, the chapter refers to a number of examples of medium- and long-term projects regarding migrants living in Italy which have been implemented in recent years. In addition, we speculate on possible future scenarios for Italy, which, like other European nations, is affected by the presence ofrefugees fleeing from events such as war and violence, and asylum seekers. The context investigated in the chapter shares a number of similarities with what has been happening at a European level, where the monolingualism is recognized by everyone as an unrealcondition, but linguistic and even cultural diversity is often reduced to a principle repeatedritualistically in all resolutions, a value incapable of producing aprogrammatic frame that would provide us with a set of consistent guidelines fleshing out politicalcriteria for the protection of diversity in society.

Abstract
The context investigated in the chapter shares a number of similarities with what has been happening at a European level, where the monolingualism is recognized by everyone as an unrealcondition, but linguistic and even cultural diversity is often reduced to a principle repeatedritualistically in all resolutions, a value incapable of producing aprogrammatic frame that would provide us with a set of consistent guidelines fleshing out politicalcriteria for the protection of diversity in society.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
