The book presents an analysis of contemporary Italian and of its sociolinguistic varieties in view of their presentation to foreign students belonging to other linguistic and cultural contexts. The book is divided into four chapters, each referred to a variation parameter: space, society, context and communicative channel. Pierangela Diadori wrote chapters 1 (pp. 17-79, on diatopic varieties) and chapter 2 (pp. 95-129, on diastratic varieties). Chapter 1 illustrates the features of standard Italian compared with Italian dialects and with regional varieties of Italian. An overview of the language minorities which are present throughout the country and of the diffusion of Italian outside of Italy completes the chapter. Chapter 2 presents language change in society (according to the speakers’ level of instruction, gender, group, vocational competence). Each chapter is completed with examples and activities for reflection.
