The Italian language was a language “without empire” and for a long time without nation, foreign to most of the inhabitants of the peninsula itself, but there was an early sense of a literary civilization common to all of Italy. The first codifiers of Italian, such as Bembo, relied on this shared heritage, which was looked upon as a model in Europe as well. In this contribution, I aim to show the effects of this complex and sometimes contradictory situation on some Italian grammars for foreigners (foreigners in the literal sense), published both outside Italy and within Italy, between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. I seek to verify the models proposed in a small corpus: in particular, which are the authors, the texts and the linguistic varieties of reference and what weight is attributed to living usage?
L’italiano è stato per molto tempo una lingua “senza impero” e non corrispondente a una nazione, una lingua straniera per la maggior parte degli abitanti della stessa Penisola; si è però avuta ben presto la consapevolezza di una civiltà letteraria comune a tutta Italia. I primi codificatori della lingua italiana, tra i quali Bembo, si sono basati su questo patrimonio condiviso, che ha rappresentato un modello anche per il resto dell’Europa. Lo scopo del saggio è mostrare come questa situazione complessa e a volte contraddittoria si rifletta in alcune grammatiche d’italiano per stranieri (stranieri in senso proprio), grammatiche pubblicate sia fuori d’Italia, sia in Italia, tra Cinquecento e Seicento. Ciò che interessa è individuare i modelli proposti nel piccolo corpus considerato, verificando in particolare quali siano gli autori e i testi di riferimento e quanto peso venga attribuito all’uso vivo.
