This paper analyzes the relationship between music and «ideas of place», referring to the social potential of music (through sounds, lyrics, video clips) in relation with territory. The relationship between «academic geographies» and «popular geographies» is taken into account. May a positive «contamination» between these two channels be possible? What mechanisms come into play in conveying the «sense of place» through music? Is it possible to consider a case study in which this interweaving of music, music videos and «idea of place» has an actual effect? After a theoretical introduction, the analysis follows two paths. The first is the result of a seminar work with students and teachers: the famous song «Torna a Surriento» is the occasion to start a path between different songs, examining their connections with geographical and territorial aspects and considering how the connection between popular music and «ideas of place» may works. The second focuses on the performative power of music on the territorialisation process, examining the song (and the video clip) Il lago che combatte and its importance on the specific conflict between different "ideas of place" in the former «SNIA viscosa» area, in the city of Rome.
