Ancient Greek preserved the remnants of the lost category of the PIE stative in the endings of the perfect and a handful of archaic middle present stems. In Hellenistic language, these forms tend to persist in literary contexts affected by archaizing tendencies, while the language of common use provides clear evidence of their merger with other – more productive – categories of the verbal system.
