Dietro la maschera. Apparizioni della prima persona nell'Antigone di Sofocle

This paper aims at describing the circumstances under which first-person plural markers can occur in Sophocles’ Antigone, particularly focusing on their contrast with singular and dual forms. First-person plural markers can be in fact related to different functions, expressing genuine plurals (involving inclusive or exclusive interpretations) as well as functioning as a variant of the singular (such as the so-called modestiae/maiestatis pluralis). The value of each form has, thus, to be determined on a case-by-case basis in a picture where ambiguity too can play a role.
