After outlining the key moments in the acquisition of punctuation as an element of the process of modernisation and democratisation of the written Japanese language, and commenting on the attestation of its tendential uses in the main normative documents that have dealt with it, the contribution presents notable aspects of the literary use of modern and contemporary Japanese punctuation, demonstrating its importance in the definition of style with examples ranging from the earliest examples of modern novels in the second half of the 19th century to contemporary literature in non-print media.
