My three chapters (pp. 9-54) deal with different but related phenomena. "Dimostrativi e ego fissile" focuses on the tripartite Latin demonstrative system, and in particular on the functional value of iste, which is crucially related to dialogic texts, though not necessarily dependent on the actual presence of an addressee. "Soggetto e riflessivo" describes the antecedent of the Latin reflexive by the relational notion of "first subject" and analyses long-distance reflexives as occurring in complement clauses. The aim of "Ipse: interdipendenze sintattiche" is to describe the relationship of ipse with grammatical function and person. When ipse does not occur with an explicit (pro)nominal, a privileged relationship emerges with the subject function: only when related to the subject, may ipse refer to any person; otherwise, it is third person.
