The article concerns the manuscripts of the Sienese sculptor Patrizio Fracassi (1875-1903). They consist of observations about art and drafts of literary works. Fracassi on his writings about art, composed between 1902 and 1903, speculates about the role of artists, the function of artworks and the kind of reception of these works received from the general public. These pages reflect his socialist ideals and also the argument, common in that period, against the formalism and the excesses of photographic realism. Among the literary pieces, Giada Mattarucco analyses in particular two drafts of a short story, written between 1902 and 1903 and left unfinished. It is the melodramatic story of Cesarina Santelena and Don Marzio. Giada Mattarucco’s paper reconstructs the history of the texts, examines their main linguistic aspects and studies the variations in Fracassi’s writing. She points out the models for the texts and highlights the points of contact with other artists and authors, above all with Federigo Tozzi, another Senese, almost contemporary and an admirer of Fracassi.
Il contributo riguarda i manoscritti dello scultore senese Patrizio Fracassi (1875-1903), ovvero un fascicoletto di riflessioni sull’arte e abbozzi di prove letterarie. Nei pensieri sull’arte, vergati tra 1902 e 1903, Fracassi si interroga sul ruolo degli artisti, sulla funzione delle opere d’arte e sulla ricezione di tali opere da parte del pubblico. Queste pagine riflettono gli ideali socialisti dello scultore, ma anche la polemica del tempo contro l’accademismo e contro gli eccessi del realismo fotografico. Tra le prove letterarie, vengono considerate in particolare le due redazioni di una novella, risalenti anch’esse al 1902-1903: si tratta della melodrammatica vicenda di Cesarina Santelena e di Don Marzio, rimasta incompiuta. Il breve saggio di Giada Mattarucco ricostruisce la storia dei testi, esamina i principali aspetti linguistici e analizza le varianti degli scritti dello scultore, evidenziando modelli e punti di contatto con altri artisti e autori, soprattutto con Federigo Tozzi, conterraneo, quasi contemporaneo ed estimatore di Fracassi.
