Uscire dal vago. Analisi linguistica della vaghezza del linguaggio

Vagueness is generally regarded as a semiotic attribute. A powerful and natural force inherent in languages due to its coexistence with articulation and syntax. Concerning the regulation of vagueness itself and everything it represents (increase and decrease of lexicon, grammar and metalinguistic reflexivity) there is still even more to explore within the field of linguistic studies. This book is focusing on linguistic vagueness and aims to reconstruct a theoretical definition. In an attempt to piece together the fragmented debate rekindled in the 20th century that focuses on interesting but largely unexplored themes in the work of Ferdinand de Saussure, the book aims to demonstrate the manner and extent to which vagueness is ingrained in the formation of linguistic signs. This, in turn, lends itself to the very creation of languages. To that end, vagueness can be considered, first and foremost, a sign-based semiotic attribute. The book is addressing the value of this definition on a strictly applied level by discussing the possibility of distinguishing between two types of vagueness: systemic and intentional. In the second half of the book, the argument is moving to an analysis of the use of Italian prepositions. The choice and use of prepositions in both written and spoken Italian is defined by the speaker's subjective linguistic choices, yet is even more deeply connected to the vagueness of the system.

Che la vaghezza sia proprietà generalmente semiotica, straordinariamente potente nelle lingue storico-naturali per il suo coesistere con articolatezza e sintatticità, e poi con ciò che della vaghezza stessa rappresenta il bilanciamento - incrementabilità e decrementabilità della massa lessicale, grammaticalità e metalinguisticità riflessiva – è questione che nell’ambito della tradizione degli studi linguistici rimane ancora tutta da approfondire. Nel tentativo di ricucire tra di loro i pezzi di un dibattito, quello riaccesosi nel secolo scorso, molto frammentario, dibattito che rintraccia spunti interessanti quanto ampiamente inesplorati nell’opera di Ferdinand de Saussure, il volume focalizza l’attenzione sulla vaghezza linguistica, mirando a ricostruirne una definizione teorica. Tale definizione procede dal mostrare quanto e come la vaghezza sia connaturata alla vita dei segni linguistici, al farsi stesso delle lingue e sia dunque una proprietà innanzitutto segnica. Il volume valuta il peso di tale definizione sul piano strettamente applicativo, discutendo la possibilità di distinguere tra una vaghezza sistemica e una vaghezza intenzionale, tutta legata alla scelta del parlante e alla situazione contestuale. Nel far ciò, il volume fa riferimento nella sua seconda parte al sistema delle preposizioni dell’italiano, mostrando come la scelta e l’uso delle preposizioni, nell’italiano scritto quanto nell’italiano parlato sia sì dipendente dalle scelte linguistiche del parlante, ma sia anche e più profondamente legata alla vaghezza di tale sistema.
