This volume stems from the conference held at the University for Foreigners of Siena in January 2025 and is, in turn, the result of research conducted as part of the 2022 PRIN PNRR "Straniere project: The Reception of Non-European Arts and Cultures in Italy (1945–2000)", funded by the Ministry of University and Research and the European Union (NextGenerationEU). The project, coordinated by the University for Foreigners of Siena together with the Universities of Parma and Udine, aims to provide an initial survey of texts and images capable of illustrating the modes of reception and critical reception of non-European cultures in Italy during the second half of the 20th century. The case studies presented here fit within this framework, organized around several thematic axes and focusing, in particular, on the artists’ perspective, as well as the dynamics of reception, circulation, and dissemination within the contemporary art system in Italy from 1945 to 2000.
