In the aftermath of the Unification, dueling, especially for political reasons, experienced a season of great diffusion, so much so that we came to speak of «duellomania». This situation prompted a large number of personalities belonging to the ruling class to hope for the drafting of a code of chivalry which on the one hand would unify the various differences in the interpretation of the laws of honor inherited from the past fragmentation of the Peninsula; on the other hand, by meticulously regulating every aspect of the disputes, it would restrict cases of dueling to the most serious offenses. General Achille Angelini with his Codice Cavalleresco Italiano, published for the first time in 1883, was the first to consciously propose a legislative unification in the field of honor, even if shortly thereafter his work was overtaken by that of Jacopo Gelli.

Abstract
In the aftermath of the Unification, dueling, especially for political reasons, experienced a season of great diffusion, so much so that we came to speak of «duellomania». This situation prompted a large number of personalities belonging to the ruling class to hope for the drafting of a code of chivalry which on the one hand would unify the various differences in the interpretation of the laws of honor inherited from the past fragmentation of the Peninsula; on the other hand, by meticulously regulating every aspect of the disputes, it would restrict cases of dueling to the most serious offenses. General Achille Angelini with his Codice Cavalleresco Italiano, published for the first time in 1883, was the first to consciously propose a legislative unification in the field of honor, even if shortly thereafter his work was overtaken by that of Jacopo Gelli.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
