This chapter sets out to investigate the linguistic construction of characters as diegetic devices in the language and translation of a film where age, gender, and ethnicity intertwine. The methodology is based on a framework that takes multimodal dimensions of language and diegesis (Ramos Pinto & Mubaraki 2020, Renna 2021) into consideration to understand how they contribute to the character design in reproducing or challenging stereotypes. The reasons for choosing the film The Joy Luck Club (1993) lay in its role as one of the first films of AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) production to reach a large audience while dealing with these issues.
