In 2021, shortly before the thirtieth anniversary of his cinematic debut and just one film away from his announced retirement (at least as a director), Tarantino gave a long interview to his devoted fan and controversial public figure Joe Rogan on the well-known show The Joe Rogan Experience. Over the course of the three-hour podcast, Tarantino retraces his career and revisits some of the controversies that have marked it. Positioned at the intersection of Tarantino as director, cinephile, public persona, and private individual, the self-portrait he offers appears to align closely with the act of narrating one’s own life as a means of assigning it structure and meaning. Drawing on a methodological framework that combines Critical Discourse Analysis and Systemic Functional Linguistics, this chapter aims to divide the interview into thematic clusters relevant to Tarantino’s self-representation and professional trajectory, and from these to outline how the director linguistically constructs himself both as a person and as a character, as well as the role he assigns to his work within the history of cinema.
Nel 2021, poco prima del trentesimo anniversario del suo esordio cinematografico, e a un solo film dalla sua uscita di scena (almeno come regista), Tarantino ha concesso una lunga intervista al suo grande fan, e figura controversa, Joe Rogan, nel noto show The Joe Rogan Experience. Nelle tre ore di podcast, Tarantino ripercorre la sua carriera e ripensa ad alcune delle controversie che la hanno segnata. Sita all’incrocio tra il Tarantino regista, amante del cinema, personaggio e persona, la visione che offre di sé sembra combaciare pienamente con l’atto di narrazione della propria esistenza come strumento per attribuirle struttura e significato. Con una metodologia che si avvale di Critical Discourse Analysis e Systemic Functional Linguistics, questo capitolo si propone di suddividere l’intervista in nuclei tematici rilevanti rispetto alla descrizione di sé e della propria carriera, e da essi delineare il modo in cui il regista si costruisce linguisticamente come persona e come personaggio, e quale ruolo attribuisce alla sua opera nella storia del cinema.
