The essay focuses on some polemical writings of the most illustrious Italian scientist, concerning the long controversy against the Aristotelian philosophers. In particular, we refer to the long letter to Gallanzoni (July 16th 1611), in which the scientist replies to the objections of Lodovico delle Colombe, who tried to refute the mountainous nature of the lunar surface, discovered and disseminated by Sidereus Nuncius (1610). This letter, among the first formulations of the Galileo’s mathematical-experimental method, is also placed in the key moment of the transition from latin to vernacular, due to the need to spread scientific knowledge beyond closed university environments. Abstract
