As the Freudian concept of «Nachträglichkeit» (deferred action) well describe, trauma is elaborated only years after the event has happened. Repression, ellipsis and syntactic disarticulation are consequently among the most frequent techniques used in narratives. In this paper, I consider two texts exploring trauma, which is narrated through different semiotic techniques: the interviews collected by S. Aleksievich in The Unwomanly Face of War and Balagov’s drama film Beanpole, which is partially inspired by the former. Starting from an analysis of some recurring strategies and motives in the experiences by female veterans of the Second World War, the aim is to analyse the way in which, feeding on their partial memories, the director enhances silence and retells, by means of a different language, the desperate and impossible attempt to regain femininity and motherhood in the post-war context.

Abstract
As the Freudian concept of «Nachträglichkeit» (deferred action) well describe, trauma is elaborated only years after the event has happened. Repression, ellipsis and syntactic disarticulation are consequently among the most frequent techniques used in narratives. In this paper, I consider two texts exploring trauma, which is narrated through different semiotic techniques: the interviews collected by S. Aleksievich in The Unwomanly Face of War and Balagov’s drama film Beanpole, which is partially inspired by the former. Starting from an analysis of some recurring strategies and motives in the experiences by female veterans of the Second World War, the aim is to analyse the way in which, feeding on their partial memories, the director enhances silence and retells, by means of a different language, the desperate and impossible attempt to regain femininity and motherhood in the post-war context.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
